The Delphi Developer's Special Interest Group (SIG) is a place for those passionate about Delphi application development to interact, ask questions, exchange ideas and just have fun.

Meetings

Meetings are held several times a year online. Dates, times and credentials are emailed to members.

History

For fourteen years, the group held monthly meetings in a physical space. Attendees sometimes drove several hours from a multi-state region to attend our two hour meetings. All meetings are now held online. .

Founder Rick Ross

After being selected to test the Delphi beta, Rick trained and mentored hundreds of Delphi developers, gave presentations to groups of developers on a myriad of Delphi related topics and led several development teams. He directed the development and nationwide rollout of multiple enterprise systems and is the designer and architect behind several highly successful commercial applications.

February

David Intersimone, VP, Developer Relations and Chief Evangelist at Embarcadero Technologies delivered an excellent presentation on Delphi 2009 and Delphi Prism.

2006

December

Tonight members participated in an abbreviated version of the annual trivia challenge, and discussed a wide variety of development topics. Among them: .NET 2.0, CodeGear, the Delphi Compact Framework, Mono, Skype, and Delphi Highlander.

Developer's roundtable

April

The group had a great discussion that centered around Indy components for Delphi. We went on to discuss methods for securely sending data and Delphi 2006.

March

Tonight developers brought there questions to discuss with the group. Topics included salaries for Delphi developers, a new mediated peer to peer tool called Himachi, project maintenance issues, the latest news about Borland and much more!

February

Thanks to Doug McGlothlin for presenting a new Delphi tool on which he's working. The tool automatically generates code that provides an interface and associated XML database. It's ideal for quickly building small office applications. Doug promised he'd show us more in the near future.

2005

December

This was the 6th year for the Annual Holiday Trivia Challenge prepared by Rick Ross. The group was challenged with questions on a variety of subjects including the .NET Framework, Delphi VCL, Delphi for .NET, Delphi history, C#, Best Practices and more. One developer was even hit with a spelling question!

After all the hard work, developers were amply rewarded with great snacks brought by member David Pugh. Thanks Dave!

November

The first US Roadshow stop and the US Premier of Delphi 2006! Rick Ross presented and overview and demonstration of the new features in Delphi 2006. Borland provided a copy of Delphi Architect and Delphi Pro as door prizes! Thank you Borland for the prizes and the great updates to Delphi!

Wow! 10 YEARS! 10 years ago this group held it's first meeting at the CCS Resource Center on West Broad St. A big THANK YOU to all those developers and vendors that have made it a great ten year run!

Rick Ross of Ross Innovation Inc. presented an introduction to C# for Delphi developers. Special thanks to Microsoft for there support. They donated a copy of Visual Studio .NET Enterprise Edition as a door prize for this meeting.

Tonight we discussed several current issues suggested by group members, including database applications and the use of Delphi interfaces.

We discussed a wide variety of topics. Rick Ross of Ross Innovation Inc. presented examples of how to use intefaces in Delphi.

2004

December

As usual we had a great time with our annual holiday trivia game. Thanks to a few years of experience with it, several people commented that this year's questions were the best ever. There's so much going on in the development world, there was a wide range of topics including C#, .NET, patterns, Delphi and even the history of our group.

Rick is already hard at work on the questions for next year's event. Be there!

Our Delphi SIG hosted the first Delphi 2005 launch event in the US! We gave away more than $5500 in door prizes courtesy of Borland.

Rick Ross delivered the presentation, quickly moving through the long list of new features found in Delphi 2005. He demonstrated how they can be used to help developers deliver results more quickly.

October

Rick Ross of Ross Innovation Inc. delivered a presentation that began with a overview of XML. He then described techniques for processing XML using the Microsoft .NET Framework. The presentation ended with a review of code that reads and writes XML.

September

We started to the Borland conference, but instead ended up with a demonstration of how to use an XML file to dynamically generate a configuration unit with little effort.

Our 100th meeting celebration! Cake, a few give-aways, and a discussion of Delphi tools and components.

Summer Break

June

At this meeting, Rick Ross of Ross Innovation Inc. demonstrated how to build a Winforms applicaiton and presented several code examples. .NET Enumerations, VCL vs. .NET and other topics were also discussed.

May

Rick Ross of Ross Innovation Inc. presented a session on the VCL .NET capabilties of Delphi 8. .NET fundamentals including namespaces, and the .NET Framework were discussed at length.

April

A short presentation and discussion of the new installation standard MSI was followed by a demonstration of the impressive feature set offered by InstallShield Express 5.0.

March

Rick Ross presented three methods for obtaining and recording application information. The advantages and disadvantages of each method were then reviewed in detail.

February

A Systems Engineer and Technical Architect from Borland were on hand to demonstrate the Delphi 8 for the Microsoft .NET Framework. A copy of Delphi 8 Architect was raffled off. In addition to learning a great deal, everyone received Borland promotional items and copies of the best magazine for Delphi, the Delphi Informant.

2003

December

This was the first meeting at our new location at the Old Worthington Library. Everyone was very happy with the new facility. It's comfortable, spacious, and hasa great projector.

This meeting hosted the fourth annual Delphi Trivia game. Questions covered a wide variety of topics: Delphi procedured and functions, XML, Design Patterns, Delphi history, Delphi SIG history, database applications, components and more. Everyone had a great time and learned something!

Rick Ross gave a presentation on web services. The presentation discussed web service technology and how it might be used. A demonstration showed a Delphi built web client and server. It was also highlighted by Delphi applications connecting to several commercial services.

A representative from Borland presented Delphi 7 to a large group of attendees including developers from Cincinnati and Dayton. Copies of Delphi 7 Architect and Kylix were given away.

Delphi and the Database Part 1 - Single Tier Applications, MyBase, the case for suffixes, and a review of the Borland conference.

An overview of the Async Professional communications library. We learned how to detect an Internet connection and how to update an application over the web.

Automated Regression Testing for Delphi and Windows Applications. Our presenter wasl Quality Assurance & Software Testing Expert, Bill Asburry from ExpertTest Inc. Bill discussed automated testing with Delphi.

Chuck Vertrees of Extended Systems presented an overview of the Advantage Database Server and gave away a prize package worth over $1900.

Developer's roundtable

A demonstration of a commercial Delphi program that controls and adds advanced functionality to professional VCRs. The developer demonstrated the application and discussed the techniques used to build it.

A commercial Delphi application was used to control a Robot. The developer discussed techniques and gave an incredible demonstration!

Delphi and the web! Attendees were given several detailed handouts and saw a demonstration of how Delphi can be used to build web applications.

Ray Konopka, author of two books on component building and the monthly column in Visual Developer magazine, Delphi by Design, presented a session on Component Development Techniques. He demonstrated how developer's can use collections in their applications.

Mark Miller president of Los Angeles based Eagle Software and very popular Borland Conference speaker demonstrated CodeRush, React, and CDK and also discussed component building techniques.
